How Can I Best Insulate My Home In the Winter?

Winter is never a big deal in Texas but this year might be any different. First things first! I always suggest calling a reputable HVAC specialist and having your system checked prior to both the summer and winter seasons. Understand that this will require some advanced planning which may be a strain for some of you. Two companies I refer business to all the time are Levy and Son (972) 241-8503 and Hammack Service Company (972) 669-9192. In addition to checking for leaks, they will clean and lubricate the system as necessary.

Be sure to check for leaks and replace worn weather stripping and caulk. Install foam gaskets behind electric wall switch plates to prevent leaks. Add insulation to the attic. Few attics I ever visit have enough and this is where you get the biggest “bang for the buck” in energy efficiency.

If your windows are vintage old aluminum and leak like a sieve, consider replacing them with energy efficient models. If replacement is out of the question, I suggest you consider freezing to death before putting that opaque plastic sheeting over them. Your neighbors would kill you!

Close the damper on your fireplace when not in use. Install a chimney cap to keep out debris and pests. Remember to open the damper on Christmas Eve for invited guests!

If you are on a pier and beam foundation, don’t block the air vents with those metal inserts. This cuts down on necessary ventilation (one reason pier and beams were popular in the first place) and the energy savings is negligible.
