What Should I Do Before I Move In?
1. Have a locksmith re-key all the locks. You don’t know where all the keys are or who has had keys to your new home! Contractors, Realtors, Movers...they are all hard working and honest folk, until a bad apple spoils the bunch. I know you're tempted to save the cost of hiring a locksmith, but don't! Invest in having your locks rekeyed.
2. Bring a cashier’s check to closing. Your Title Company will tell you the day of closing how much you need to bring. And in case you didn't know it, most Title Companies will allow you to write a personal check up to an amount of $1500.
3. Make sure you have arranged to have your new home insured. Your insurance agent/company will then handle all the details with the Title Company for insuring your new home. If your lender isn't convinced that your new home is covered, the loan won't close!
4. Turn on the utilities. Contact your utility company plenty of time in advance of closing so that the utilities are on when you arrive. Don't "assume", make the call!
